Aqualectra and Seven Seas Sign MoU to Explore New Water Plant Construction
Aqualectra and Seven Seas Water Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to negotiate the construction of RO-5 Hato West, a new water plant using Reverse Osmosis technology to desalinate seawater.
The plant will use advanced processes to efficiently remove salts, ions, minerals, and other impurities from seawater before delivering it to consumers. This technology has long been used in Curaçao to produce the island’s renowned high-quality drinking water.
The development of the RO-5 Hato West plant means that Aqualectra will cease drinking water production at the Mundu Nobo facility, creating space for future tourism and commercial developments at the site.
Earlier this year, in February, Aqualectra publicly announced that Seven Seas had been selected as the 'preferred bidder.' This led to the formal signing of an MOU between Aqualectra and Seven Seas on August 28, 2024. The MOU sets the stage for continued negotiations towards a Water Purchase Agreement (WPA). The target is to finalize the contract for the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) project, which will have a daily production capacity of 25,000 m³ of drinking water, by October 2024.
Aqualectra anticipates that the new plant will be operational by October 2026. The facility will provide reliable, high-quality water to Curaçao’s residents and visitors, playing a key role in the island’s progress and well-being.
